He has visited Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, USA, as Post Doctoral Fellow. Dr.Sherigara has also visited Bon University, Germany, Gent University , Belgium, and People Republic of China, on academic programmes. The academic Profile Of Dr.B.S.Sherigara does not give Indication of the extraordinary way in which he has risen to such heights from a humble background. He was born on 17 December 1945, at Bailure Udupi, in a small backward community and was the first generation literate in his family. He had his early education at Basel Mission School and Christian High School Udupi. As such Dr.Sherigara had first-hand experience of the constraints of financial and social status. Despite these constraints he did his Pre-University and B.Sc course at M.G.M.College Udupi. After his graduation he worked as Demonstrator in Chemistry in the same college during 1965-’69 and simultaneously did his Bachelor of Law degree from Udupi Law College with the intention of making banking career. However he changed his mind when he was selected as Demonstrator in Chemistry by Karnataka Public Service Commission for a post at Government College Tumkur, under the Director of Collegiate Education in Karnataka. In 1974 Mr.Sherigara was deputed to Mysore University for his M.Sc course in Chemistry and obtained M.Sc in Physical Chemistry. Later he was posted to the Government College Mangalore (presently constituent College of Mangalore University) where he was promoted as Lecturer. Believing that gaining knowledge through education is a continuous process and there is no end to it, Mr.Sherigara persued research leading to Ph.D Degree at the newly started Chemistry Department of Mangalore University which enabled him to get a lecturer post in the same University to be promoted later as Reader. The real breakthrough in his professional career was in 1994 when he was appointed as Professor and Chairman of Department of Industrial Chemistry at Kuvempu University. He could bring about drastic changes in the teaching programmes and inculcated research culture in the Department by initiating research almost from scratch. Thus his entry to the Department brought about remarkable changes both in Teaching and Research. He promoted University-Industry interaction with the nearby Chemical Industries. The collaborative Research Project with Applied and Analytical Chemistry Divisions of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,Trombay, the MOU with Department of Chemistry,Wichita State University, Wichita,Kansas ,USA, Consultancy Programme with Mysore Paper Mills Limitted, Bhadravathi, etc., have immensely helped the Department of Industrial Chemistry of Kuvempu University academically. As Vice-Chancellor he took individual interest in making the benefits available to the students coming from rural places and socially disadvantaged sections. During his tenure he has significantly contributed to the infrastructure Development of the University. He strived for the enhancement of academic standards and enabled the University to get reaccredited by NAAC. He started Nanomission-DST sponsored M.Tech course in Nano Science and Technology. Enabled Sahyadri Science &Arts Colleges (Constituent College)to get developmental grants from the State Government and UGC ,eventually both colleges got ‘Colleges with Potential for Excellence’ status from the UGC. Large number of academic programmes, publications, and research funding have been the hall mark of various units of the University during Dr.Sherigara’s tenure at Kuvempu University. Dr.Sherigara has been forthright in his views as a speaker. He has spoken forcefully on variety of social issues and problems. He bridged the gap between the University and society by adopting a liberal and democratic approach. Prof.Sherigara received Appreciation Award from Indian Association of Analytical Scientists, Mumbai 1995, Indian Council of Chemists Award for organizing Annual Conference of ICC 2000, Platinum Jubilee Award for excellence in the field of Education from Devadiga Sangha , a Cultural Association Mumbai in 2001. He was awarded Founders Day ‘Sadhana Puraskar’ by Kuvempu University for teaching and Research 2003. He is the recipiant of Amity Academic Excellence Award from Amity University and Eminent Educationalist Award from Dehali Kannadiga in 2010 and the Teachers Day award 2011 from Alva’s Education Foundation. Dr.Sherigara and his wife Mrs.Jayashree Udupi are blessed with two daughters. Elder daughter Mrs.Mahim.U, an Engineering Post Graduate, is married to Mr.Kiran Kumar a Project Leader in a Multinational Company having two children,Shreesha and Shreya.
