Anil Devadiga - Blending Colours On Canvas - 3/1/2007

Mangalorean.com| Photogarphs: RK Bhat

Mangalore Feb 27: Seeking elevation from mundane thoughts and ways, Mind Wash, works of Anil Devadiga, is a treat to one, as it dwells deep into the metaphysics of mind and body and their synchronization with strokes of passion and loads of intellectualism.

Mind Wash, an abstract work and mixed media on mount called nails by this alumnus of Sir J J School of Art is being exhibited at Prasad Art Gallery, Ballalbagh. The Mind Wash series is a journey of self-realization, without any boundary, thereby avoiding being restrained. It is a confluence of material and immaterial world, where the journey to horizon begins always from inside. The artist, Devadiga, exemplarily speaks of soul's quest for self-realization through the intricacies of physics of painting.

Devadiga, who speaks of philosophy at the drop of a hat, says art should never be typecast be it in any medium, form or expression, for there would not be any creativity. His paintings with nails, are a proof for that, where the artist ahs tried to evolve himself (and also his works) from the mundane themes and expression without spoiling the very soul of the piece. His works eloquently display the passion of synchronising the objects of material and immaterial world. He has, in fact, incorporated nails with geometrical shapes perfectly balancing the shade and light with proper boundary to explain one's limitations and search to go beyond. Though some of the works appear as pure abstract, it certainly holds the tempo of the mood of the painting and artist's passion to look beyond the framed limits of this materialistic world.

Devadiga, says "I want to elaborate an artistic lineage for myself, not through ponderous statements of ideological intent, but through the visceral imprints of colours, gestures and metaphor". True to his belief, his works make an impact to a large extent. What stands out in his paintings is artist's never-say-die spirit to excel without yielding to the common concepts of physics of painting, still making a pure painting.

Devadiga, a BCom graduate, who went on to follow his passion at Sir J J School of Art Mumbai has always has a soul which is in quest for meaning of life, looking inside, deep and down. After graduation from the prestigious school, he under the tutelage of famous artist Atul Dodiya at Mumbai worked on contemporary art and is presently running an art school near Mallikatta. The artist, who firmly refuses to be bound by any medium or form, says he believes in exploring the mystery of painting, of infinite spaces, which are otherwise thought as limitations. He further says, he wants to evolve himself form the 'expressional form of art' and would put his passion for the quest of life's metaphysics.

Devadiga has given couple of exhibitions at Mumbai and Bangalore.

Mangalore Sangha fighting for survival.......Join hands to inspire revival - 12/27/2006

MANGALORE SANGHA FIGHTING FOR SURVIVAL

(by Yashwant Gujaran, qualytech@gmail.com)

Recently on my trip to Mangalore, I had the opportunity to meet the Devadiga Sangha office bearers in Mangalore. President Dinesh Devadiga, Vice President K.J.Devadiga, Committee member Mohan Bakimar & others explained to me what is happening in Mangalore at present & what they are doing about it. As I listened my jaw dropped, fist clenched, muscles tightened. I had gone to explain about the Devadiga.com web site, etc which eventually I did for which they gave a keen & a patient hearing. I was aghast at the kind of betrayal of trust & confidence, which has never been seen before.

In brief Karnataka Rajya Devadiga Sangha has woken up from the stupor/ paralysis/ drift in which they were in for more than a year. The resignation of Mr Annayya Sherigar as President was accepted & Mr K. Dinesh Devadiga has been elected to the post of President of the Sangha. The committee now appears fully seized with the challenge of restructuring the hope & aspirations of the people. Their task immediately at hand is completing the balance work of the construction of the Devadiga Building as that will start generating revenue from the sale/rent of shops, revenue from use of premises which has an auditorium/ marriage hall. Incomplete work was allowing people to misuse the premises etc. The school run by the Sangha has its classes being conducted in most unhygienic circumstances. There is mud & dust every where resulting in children falling sick. As a result of this the school is facing a high drop out rate. The very purpose of education and an attempt to spread literacy is failing. Completing the building will give them a certain relief from the financial strain they are in today. However in addition to money, it will require a lot of effort to get this going.

Please note, many of the office bearers & committee members of the Sangha are also in the Mangala Coop Credit Society which is facing the gigantic/ daunting task of rescuing & reviving, which is a huge, huge problem which will take a lot of time & money. I am assuming most of you are aware of the problems in the society & Sangha in Mangalore. The idea of the perpetrators was to sink the Credit society so that repayments need not be done. Very fortunately it has not happened & by Gods Grace (Devi Raja Rajeshwari in Polali, where I recently prayed) it will not happen at all.

The more I understood the gravity of the situation the more I feel sad, how we are being taken for a ride a by the unscrupulous. It is shocking how one or two people can manipulate the entire Society. Actually history repeated itself after about 15 years.  15 years back these very people were a happy lot, having fought & won a pitched battle to outwit & out maneuver a well entrenched manipulative dictator who thought that he cannot be touched. This should be a lesson for the people to guard against the glib talkers & dominating personalities.

What NOW: Except a few changes, the present committee consists of all the members who were in the previous committee. They realize that however hard they may work; some blame will always come to them. It does appear that collectively they have resigned themselves to this fact & decided to move on, which I feel is good as it frees them of the burden of the past & allows them to focus on future. They are collectively working hard & pooling their efforts in both the Sangha & the credit society. The Sangha has an immediate task as they require about 40 lakhs to complete the minimum work to make the building operational. Very fortunately, most of committee members instead of getting demoralized &/or abandoning have regrouped with renewed vigor to repair the damage. For them it is an acid test of their integrity & commitment. In my opinion it is very good sign.

At this point in time the Sangha in Mangalore is facing an uphill task & needs our full attention, unstinted support, both in cash & kind. Do ask how all this happened or discus how this can be prevented in future. But time right now is to see how we can help them to do the turnaround. This is the most vulnerable period & it is a question of survival. This is not the time for blame game or finger raising. Finally, do we have a role to play & if so what kind of a role. Over to you, all my dear readers/ friends. But first please do show your concern with the Mangalore Sangha. Phone them or send sms. Collect /send money. Let’s first help them. We do need to think as how we can prevent such massive betrayal of trust.
