THE diversity of India’s cultural heritage and its freedom movement were the themes of a mega show organised by the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) to mark India’s 59th Independence Day, at the Doha Cinema recently.

Over 250 artistes belonging to Indian schools and cultural associations affiliated to the ICC staged dances, theatrical performances and songs to highlight ‘India’s unity in diversity’ and its freedom struggle that eventually led to the country’s freedom from British rule in 1947.

Thunder Kids, an all-children orchestra, sang patriotic songs in many Indian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Tulu and Punjabi.

An item presented by the MANGALORE CRIKET CLUB highlighted how traditional Indian values have survived in spite of foreign domination, spanning over 400 years.

THE KARNATAKA SANGHA Sangha Qatar through a skit demonstrated how Indians can utilise their talents to tap the many opportunities available to them in today’s world.

The programme began with the welcome address by ICC president K C Varghese. Charge d’affaires at the Indian embassy and chief co-ordinating officer of ICC Rajinder Bhagat gave the patron’s speech.

The ICC website (www.iccdoha.com) was officially launched by Bhagat.
Qafco acting managing director William Svendsen, marketing manager Yusuf Jaham al-Kuwari, and Qatar Airways sales manager Gopal Rama Rao were the special guests.

Rao released a souvenir brought out on the occasion.

Rajesh Venkat and Tanuja Sawan compered the cultural session while the show was anchored by Milan Arun, head of ICC cultural activities.

ICC general secretary Saleem Ponnambath proposed a vote of thanks.

The main sponsor of the event was Qatar Airways while Qafco was the co-sponsor. Gulf Times was the official newspaper.


K Bhaskar Moily elected chairman for the Works and Town Planning Committee - 9/3/2005

MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation on Monday ( 22 Aug 2005) elected the heads of four standing committees.

In the elections held in the Mayor's chamber, Corporator Bhaskar Moily elcted as chairman for the Works and Town Planning Committee, Appi chairperson for Health and Social Justice Committee and Lancy Serrao chairperson for the Accounts Committee.  Premchand has been elected chairman of the Finance and Tax Appeals Committee.

There was a last minute change in the election to the Health and Social Justice Committee. Kavita Sanil was preferred to head the committee by the City Council Congress unit, however, owing to lobbying the decision went in favour of Ms. Appi.

Members for the committee were elected during the Mayor's election last month.

Pramod Kumar, Winner of singing competition - 7/31/2005

Dubai: Mr.Pramod Kumar won the 1st BOMBA Energy singing competition held at Dubai on 22nd July 2005 at Al Boom Tourist Village, Dubai.He is serving as Sales Manager at Acme Building Materials Dubai.

BOMBA Energy drink organised a 1st BOMBA singing competition at Dubai. 63 particpants were auditioned and 8 were selected for the final round. At the finals which was held on 22nd July at Al Boom Tourist Village Dubai, Mr.Pramod was declared winner in the Hindi Solo male category.

Mr.Promod is a popular singer and has presented many musical show at Mangalore and has participated in Karnataka Sangha and other musical events at Dubai.

Pramod is the son of well known leader Shri. K.R. Shriyan & Mrs.Vijaya of Mangalore

He is an alumni of Gokarnatheshwara, Mannagudda, Mangalore.

Mr.Laxmikanth Beskoor, Prop of Sri Krishna Petroleum and a member of Udupi District Congress Seva Dal was felicitated by Minister Sri Oscar Fernandes along with the the other members. This Tsunami Relief Team  toured & served in Tsunami effected areas at Tamil Nadu and Andaman Islands.    

“India has developed into the stage of incorporating natural disaster management systems in the planning process,” said Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, on Saturday.

He was speaking after felicitating the workers of the Udupi District Congress Seva Dal who rendered their services in the tsunami-affected areas last year.

Fernandes said there is now a better understanding about tsunamis and the need to have a tsunami warning system. India is not lagging behind in these efforts, he said. The transportation of relief when disaster strikes is another important issue, he added.

The Minister said that though the tsunami struck India and Sri Lanka. India has been able to take care of itself and the Indian Army went to Sri Lanka to assist with the relief operations there.

The All India Congress Committee President, Sonia Gandhi, and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, have taken keen interest in the rehabilitation works of the tsunami-affected areas, he said.

The former MP, Vinaykumar Sorake; the former MLAs, Vasanth Salian and Gopal Bhandary; the President of Dakshina Kannada Mogaveera Mahajana Sangha, Pramod Madhwaraj; the Congress leader, Sarala Kanchan; the President of Udupi District Congress Committee, Manjunath Udyavar and the President of District Congress Seva Dal, Ashok Kodavoor, were present.

The famous businessman of our community from Mumbai Sri.Suresh D Padukone has built India's tallest statue of Lord Aanjaneya at Hangaloor near Kundapur. As per the 'Inspiration from God', Mr.Suresh hailing from Padukone of Kundapur Tk and wife Smt.Shantha has been involved with this mamoth project very quietly without any publicity. This cement structure is being built by the famous sculptor Mr.Narayana Rao of Shimoga.

The 'Prathistapane' of  82 ft statue of Sri Prasanna Aanjaneya was held on 19th May at 9.30 AM by Dharmadhikari, Padmabhushan Dr.Sri.Veerendra Heggade & Sri Sri Sri Vishveshwarateertha Swamiji of Pejawar mutt. Former Chief Minister Sri.Veerappa Moily and many dignatories witnessed this veru unique relegious mahotsava. On May 18th & 19th many relegious functions were held and on 19th afternoon 'Maha Anna Sanptharpane'was organsied to a very large number of devotees
