The Academy of General Education, Manipal, in association with Manipal University, Syndicate Bank and Rotary Club of Udupi and Manipal organised a '2012 New Year Award' presentation programme at Hotel Valley View, Manipal on January 1st 2013.
The recipients of the annual New Year awards are former Vice Chancellor of Kuvempu University Dr B S Sherigar, Retired professor of Bangalore Medical University Dr K G Das, Entrepreneur of Mumbai Sudhakar S Hegde, and trustee of Barathiya Vikas Trust K M Udupa.
Prof. Sherigara after receiving the felicitation from Manipal University Chancellor Dr Ramdas M Pai said it was only in recent years that the government was coming forth to seek private participation in the field of education. The Academy of General Education should make use of opportunities thrown open by the new concepts of autonomy by bridging undergraduate and postgraduate courses. “There is every need to strengthen the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences” he said.
Chancellor Dr Ramdas Pai, Senior journalist Dr M V Kamath, Academy president Dr Krishna Rao, administrator H Shantharama and others were present.
Dr. Bailure Sheena Sherigara, former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University is an aluminous of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College Udupi. By profession Dr.Sherigara is a teacher having made serial contribution to the field of Chemical Sciences with more than 150 research papers in Polymer Chemistry, Reaction Kinetics and Electro-analytical Chemistry. He has carried out research with his major projects receiving funding from leading agencies like, UGC, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Science and Technology, Naval Research Board, etc. He has successfully guided over 30 research scholars for Ph.D Degrees in Chemistry. He has also made technical presentations at national and international conferences on the subjects of his research. He has visited Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, USA, as Post Doctoral Fellow. Dr.Sherigara has also visited Bon University, Germany, Gent University, Belgium, and People Republic of China, on academic programmes.
The academic Profile Of Dr.B.S.Sherigara does not give Indication of the extraordinary way in which he has risen to such heights from a humble background. He was born on 17 December 1945, at Bailure Udupi, in a small backward community and was the first generation literate in his family. He had his early education at Basel Mission School and Christian High School Udupi.
As such Dr.Sherigara had first-hand experience of the constraints of financial and social status. Despite these constraints he did his Pre-University and B.Sc course at M.G.M.College Udupi. After his graduation he worked as Demonstrator in Chemistry in the same college during 1965-’69 and simultaneously did his Bachelor of Law degree from Udupi Law College with the intention of making banking career. However he changed his mind when he was selected as Demonstrator in Chemistry by Karnataka Public Service Commission for a post at Government College Tumkur, under the Director of Collegiate Education in Karnataka.In 1974 Mr.Sherigara was deputed to Mysore University for his M.Sc course in Chemistry and obtained M.Sc in Physical Chemistry.
Later he was posted to the Government College Mangalore (presently constituent College of Mangalore University) where he was promoted as Lecturer. Believing that gaining knowledge through education is a continuous process and there is no end to it, Mr.Sherigara persued research leading to Ph.D Degree at the newly started Chemistry Department of Mangalore University which enabled him to get a lecturer post in the same University to be promoted later as Reader. The real breakthrough in his professional career was in 1994 when he was appointed as Professor and Chairman of Department of Industrial Chemistry at Kuvempu University. He could bring about drastic changes in the teaching programmes and inculcated research culture in the Department by initiating research almost from scratch.
Thus his entry to the Department brought about remarkable changes both in Teaching and Research. He promoted University-Industry interaction with the nearby Chemical Industries. The collaborative Research Project with Applied and Analytical Chemistry Divisions of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre,Trombay, the MOU with Department of Chemistry,Wichita State University, Wichita,Kansas ,USA, Consultancy Programme with Mysore Paper Mills Limitted, Bhadravathi,etc., have immensely helped the Department of Industrial Chemistry of Kuvempu University academically.
Dr.Sherigara has varied Interests and wide administrative experience as, Registrar in-charge(Adm),Director College Development Council, Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, as a Member/Chairman of several academic committees,etc. He has been the member of Academic Bodies like, Academic Council ,Senate, Syndicate, of Kuvempu University. Served as Member/Chairman of NAAC peer team, member of UGC Major Research Project review Committees, UGC XI th Plan committee,etc.
Dr.Sherigara has served as Vice –Chacellor of Kuvempu University from May2006 to May2010. As Vice-Chancellor he took individual interest in making the benefits available to the students coming from rural places and socially disadvantaged sections. During his tenure he has significantly contributed to the infrastructure Development of the University. He strived for the enhancement of academic standards and enabled the University to get reaccredited by NAAC. He started Nanomission-DST sponsored M.Tech course in Nano Science and Technology. Enabled Sahyadri Science & Arts Colleges (Constituent College)to get developmental grants from the State Government and UGC ,eventually both colleges got ‘Colleges with Potential for Excellence’ status from the UGC. Large number of academic programmes, publications,and research funding have been the hall mark of various units of the University during Dr.Sherigara’s tenure at Kuvempu University.Dr.Sherigara has been forthright in his views as a speaker. He has spoken forcefully on variety of social issues and problems. He bridged the gap between the University and society by adopting a liberal and democratic approach.
Prof.Sherigara received Appreciation Award from Indian Association of Analytical Scientists, Mumbai 1995, Indian Council of Chemists Award for organizing Annual Conference of ICC 2000, Platinum Jubilee Award for excellence in the field of Education from Devadiga Sangha Mumbai in 2001. He was awarded Founders Day ‘Sadhana Puraskar’ by Kuvempu University for teaching and Research 2003. He is the recipiant of Amity Academic Excellence Award from Amity University and Eminent Educationalist Award from Dehali Kannadiga in 2010 and the Teachers Day award 2011 from Alva’s Education Foundation.
Dr.Sherigara and his wife Mrs.Jayashree Udupi are blessed with two daughters. Elder daughter Mrs.Mahim.U, an Engineering Post Graduate, is married to Mr.Kiran Kumar a Project Leader in a Multinational Company having two children, Shreesha and Shreya. The younger one Dr.Charitha is a M.S (OBG) working as Asst.Professor at JNMC Belgaum, married to Dr.Pradeep Kumar N, who is persuing M.Ch in Neuro Surgery in the same Medical College.
Thus Dr.B.S.Sherigara with a humble beginning as a Demonstrator rose to the distinguished post of the Vice-Chancellor of a university by his hard and dedicated work.
